Eagle Series Models 6 & 7 and 8 & 9

Why are these models called the Eagle Series?

The earliest Model 6 and Model 7 (Old Eagle Series) movements were private label movements. Many of them were only marked with either a Large Eagle, a Medium Eagle, or a Small Eagle and no traditional signature at all.

Did you know that the Eagles are not the same on Model 6 and Model 7? The Model 6 Eagles are depicted in profile and the Model 7 Eagles are facing forward.

Even though no Model 8 or Model 9 movements are marked with an Eagle; the open-face Model 6 and hunting Model 7, the Old Eagle Series movements, are grouped together with Open-face Model 8 and hunting Model 9, the New Eagle Series movements, because Model 8 and Model 9 were the replacements for and based closely upon the design and configuration of Model 6 and Model 7. Model 8 and Model 9 serial numbers start where Model 6 and Model 7 serial numbers end.  Model 8 and Model 9 New Eagle movements were thinner and had smaller balance bridges than the Model 6 and Model 7 Old Eagle movements [*1.d].

The 1904 Seth Thomas Watch Material Catalog tells us that all Model 6 and Model 7 movements had flat hairsprings and were manufactured with gilt, nickel, and two-tone finish; however there is no mention of gilt finish in Seth Thomas Models and Grades for Model 6 or Model 7.  Seth Thomas Model and Grades informs us that all of the Model 6 and Model 7 movements were lever set; and none of the Model 6 or Model 7 Movements were adjusted [*1.g] [*1.n]. We know from observation that some of the Model 6 movements were manufactured to be pin set for use in the Companion travel time pieces.

The 1904 Seth Thomas Watch Material Catalog reports tells us that all Model 8 and Model 9 movements had Breguet hairsprings and were manufactured with gilt, nickel, and two-tone finish; however there is no mention of gilt finish in Seth Thomas Models and Grades for Model 8 or Model 9.  Seth Thomas Model and Grades informs us that Model 8 and Model 9 movements were manufactured as either lever set or pendant set; and that none of the Model 8 or Model 9 Movements were adjusted [*1.g] [*1.n]. We know from observation that some of the Model 8 movements were manufactured to be pin set for use in the Companion travel time pieces.

Model 6 movements were manufactured with with a nickel or two-tone finish, and 7 jewels at grade 36; in nickel with 11 jewels at grade 44, and grade 106 in two-tone; or 15 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 206; and  17 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 210 [*1.n].

Model 6 Movement Markings

There were eight styles of standard movement markings used on Seth Thomas Model 6 pocket watches.

The standard, non-private label, Model 6 movement markings started with (STYLE 1) a small eagle engraved on the lower central area of the top plate, and with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.”, reduced in size, inscribed on two lines around the lower left forty-five degrees of the perimeter. The “Seth Thomas” portion of the signature is inscribed in a Formal Script font.  The “Thomaston, Conn.” portion of the signature presents in some variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the right of center below the cutout for the balance wheel.

Serial number 551975 is the lowest serial number and 554701 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 1 - Documented serial number range 551975 - 554701.

Some of the Seth Thomas standard, non-private label, movement marking styles in Model 6 overlap serial number ranges. With this in mind, somewhere between serial numbers 554701 and 560805 the standard Model 6 movement markings without an eagle engraved on the movements started out with (STYLE 2) the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.” inscribed on two concentrically arched lines around the lower ninety degrees of the perimeter. The “Seth Thomas” portion of the signature is inscribed in a Formal Script font and the “Thomaston, Conn.” portion of the signature presents in a variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the right of center below the cutout for the balance wheel.

Serial number 580953 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on Page 1 of the Seth Thomas Model 6 Image Gallery of the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 2 - Documented serial number range 560805 - 582258.

Somewhere between movements number 580953 and 587426 the next Model 6 movement markings style (STYLE 3) arranged the top “Seth Thomas” portion of the signature in an upward arc as the lower “Thomaston, Conn.” portion of the signature remained in a downward arc following the perimeter of the movement.  Both portions of the signature were in an Old English font.

Serial number 587164 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on Page 2 of the Seth Thomas Model 6 Image Gallery of the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 3 - Documented serial # range 587164 - 587603.

The Model 6 marking style becomes a bit confusing in their serial number ranges as there are several variations mixed together with overlapping serial number ranges. STYLE 4 retains the pattern from Style 3; but the serial number is moved from the right-hand side of the cutout for the balance wheel to the left-hand side somewhere between serial number 587603 and 591048.

Serial number 595326 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database. This Model 6 movement marking style may be seen on Pages 2 & 3 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 6 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 4 - Documented serial # range 591028 - 595326.

The Model 6 movement marking STYLE 5 repeats the pattern from Style 2 with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.” inscribed on two concentrically arched lines around the lower ninety degrees of the perimeter; but adds the marking “Safety Pinion” under the center wheel pinion.

Serial number 587799 is the only serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database. This Model 6 movement marking style may be seen on Page 2 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 6 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 5 - Documented serial # range 587799 - 588185.

The Model 6 movement markings STYLE 6 retains serial number under the left-hand side of the cutout for the balance wheel; but the “Safety Pinion” marking is moved up to the right-hand side of the cutout, and the signature is marked in one line along the bottom 180 degrees of the perimeter. Style 7 movement markings start somewhere between movements number 598731 and 601828.

Serial number 646153 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available starting on Page 2 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 6 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 6 - Documented serial # range 594115 - 597796.

Somewhere between movements number 597796 and 598731 the Model 6 movement markings STYLE 7 relocates the “Safety Pinion” marking to beneath the center wheel pinion.

Serial number 598731 is the only serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on Page 2 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 6 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 7 - Documented serial # 598731.

Somewhere between movements number 598731 and 601828 the Model 6 movement markings STYLE 8 retained the serial number on the left-hand side of the cutout for the balance wheel; but relocates the “Safety Pinion” marking to right-hand side of the cutout, and redesigned the signature to be only one line at the bottom 180 degrees above the perimeter of the movement.

Serial number 646153 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available starting on Page 2 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 6 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 8 - Documented serial number range 601828 - 646153.

Selected Jewel Counts in Model 6 Pocket Watches

The four most common Seth Thomas jewel counts, 7 jewels, 11 jewels, 15 jewels, and 17 jewels, are shown above from left to right respectively. The top row shows the “Top Plate” and the bottom row shows the “Pillar Plate”, which is usually covered by the dial.

7-Jewel Movements in Model 6

The top two images below show the 7-jewel movement with its four visible jewels highlighted in red.

The image on the left, the Top Plate, shows the balance staff’s top cap jewel, which is protecting the balance staff’s top jewel (hole jewel) directly beneath it.  A Cap Jewel acts as a barrier between the hole jewel and outside environmental contaminants that could reduce efficiency and effectiveness of a hole jewel. When a Cap Jewel is used the wheel’s pivot rides on the Cap Jewel and is stabilized by passing through the hole jewel.

The image on the right, the Pillar Plate, shows the balance staff’s bottom cap jewel, which is protecting the balance staff’s bottom jewel (hole jewel) directly beneath it.

There are three more jewels that are hidden between the plates:

The two pallet jewels are on the wide end of the pallet fork that make contact with the escape wheel. As the escape wheel turns due to the release of power from the main spring it makes contact with the two pallet jewels in such a way that it causes the pallet fork to swing from side to side. This also moves the narrow end of the pallet fork from side to side making intermittent contact with the impulse jewel, pushing it from side to side.

The impulse jewel rides beneath the roller table near the bottom of the balance staff. As the tip of the pallet fork moves the impulse jewel from side to side it turns the roller table, hairspring, and balance wheel back and forth providing resistance to the power being released from the mainspring. By regulating the strength of this resistance, we are able to regulate the rate at which the power can be released from the mainspring through the gear train, and ultimately the rate at which the hands of the watch move around the dial.

The second two images are of an impulse jewel and two pallet forks with their pallet jewels visible.

The bottom image shows how the Pallet Fork Jewels engage the Escape Wheel.

11-Jewel Movements in Model 6

The two images below show the 11-jewel movement with its eight visible jewels highlighted.

The image on the left, the Top Plate, shows the balance staff’s top cap jewel, which is protecting the balance staff’s top jewel (hole jewel) directly beneath it highlighted in red.

It shows the top pallet jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in blue. The jewel reduces friction in the movement of the pallet fork that occurs with metal pivot passing through a metal bearing.

The image shows the top escape wheel jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in white.

It shows the 3rd Wheel top jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in yellow.

The image also shows the 4th Wheel Top Jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in green.

The image on the right, the Pillar Plate, shows the balance staff’s bottom cap jewel, which is protecting the balance staff’s bottom jewel (hole jewel) directly beneath it.

There are three more jewels that are hidden between the plates:

15-Jewel Movements in Model 6

The two images below show the 15-jewel movement with its twelve visible jewels highlighted.

17-Jewel Movements in Model 6

The two images below show a similar 17-jewel Model 3 movement with its fourteen visible jewels highlighted.

It shows the Center Wheel highlighted in orange.

The image on the right, the Pillar Plate, shows the Balance Staff’s Bottom Cap Jewel, which is protecting the Balance Staff’s Bottom Jewel (hole jewel) directly beneath it highlighted in red.

It shows the Bottom Pallet Jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in blue. This reduces friction in the movement of the pallet fork.

The image also shows the Bottom Escape Wheel Jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in white.

It shows the 3rd Wheel Bottom Jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in yellow.

The image also shows the 4th Wheel Bottom Jewel (hole jewel) highlighted in green.

It shows the Center Wheel (highlighted in orange) with the cannon pinion removed to reveal that there are no screws and no visible evidence that there is a Bottom Center Wheel Jewel.

There are three more jewels that are hidden between the plates:

Model 7 movements were manufactured with with a nickel or two-tone finish, and 7 jewels at grade 37; in nickel or two-tone with 11 jewels at grade 107; or 15 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 207; and  17 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 211 [*1.n].

Model 7 Movement Markings

There were four styles of standard movement markings used on Seth Thomas Model 7 pocket watches.

The standard (non-private label) Model 7 movement markings started with a small eagle engraved on the lower central area of the top plate, and with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.”, reduced in size, inscribed on two lines around the lower right forty-five degrees of the perimeter. The “Seth Thomas” portion of the signature is inscribed in a Formal Script font.  The “Thomaston, Conn.” portion of the signature presents in some variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the right of center below the cutout for the balance wheel. Serial number 549418 is the lowest serial number and 556754 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 1 - Documented serial number range 526458 - 557992.

Somewhere between serial numbers 556754 and 557689 the standard Model 7 movement markings without an eagle engraved on the movements started out with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.” inscribed on two lines around the lower right ninety degrees of the perimeter. The “Seth Thomas” portion of the signature is inscribed in a Formal Script font.  The “Thomaston, Conn.” portion of the signature presents in some variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the right of center below the cutout for the balance wheel. Serial number 583911 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 2 - Documented serial number range 557689 - 583911.

Somewhere between movements number 583911 and 585044 the Model 7 movement markings began to include the words “SAFETY PINION” to the left of center below the cutout for the balance wheel in a Serif Caps font. Serial number 611041 (jlepp12) is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation (by jlepp12) is available on the Pocket Watch Database. This serial number range of this pattern of markings overlapped with Style 4.

Movement Marking Style 3 - Documented serial number range 585044 - 611041.

Somewhere between movements number 585132 and 592890 a Model 7 single-line signature was used. Serial number 607953 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database. This serial number range of this pattern of markings overlapped with Style 3. This Model 7 movement marking style may be seen on Pages 2 & 3 of the Pocket Watch Database Model 7 Image Gallery.

Movement Marking Style 4 - Documented serial # range 592890 - 641855.

Model 8 movements were manufactured with with a nickel or two-tone finish, and 7 jewels at grade 36; in nickel or two-tone with 11 jewels at grade 106; or 15 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 206; and  17 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 210 [*1.n].

Serial Number 700001 - 7 Jewels - Grade 36 - No Serial Number on Top Plate

This 1904 Seth Thomas open-face 18-size Model 8 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem-wound and lever set, with a Breguet hair spring, slotted hairspring stud, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 700001, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 36. The movement is signed Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn. There is no serial number stamped on the top plate. This was the first (see explanation below) Seth Thomas New Eagle Model 8 pocket watch produced. Model 8 serial numbers started at 700001 and concluded at 2593000.

The movement presents with an 18-size Seth Thomas #1216 Roman dial with a ring minute track and black five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 18-size open-face Wessell Metal (silver plated) pocket watch case with hinged back and bezel, serial number 209729. This appears to be the original case for the movement.

A single numeral “1” has been documented in three canonical control locations:

Internal factory numbers:

  • Back of the top plate between the plates, visible between the 35 and 40-minute position.

  • Underside of the balance bridge (the usual “last-five” spot).

  • Underside rim of the balance wheel (scribed).

  • On Old Eagle Model 6 and Model 7, the last-five digits were stamped beside the banking pins; where this Model 8 shows a numeral “1” in that same legacy location.

  • Later Model 8s moved the last-five digits stamp under the 3rd-wheel pivot

    Most economical identification:

  • The Model 8 serial block begins at 700001.

  • With internal control “00001” (placeholders omitted “1”) and no conflicting marks, the simplest, evidence-conserving reading is that this movement is the first in the Model 8 block: 700001.

Winding-Bridge Construction as a Dating Tool

The winding-bridge on this movement is the clamp type, identical in structure to the ones used in Model 6, comparison example serial 597683 in this collection.
Seth Thomas shifted to a solid block winding bridge beginning somewhere between serial numbers 715597 and 731396.

Movement Markings Are Consistent with Model 8 Style 1

  • There were three styles of standard movement markings used on Seth Thomas Model 8 pocket watches.

The standard movement markings on the open-face Model 8 movements started out exactly where open-face Model 6 left off, with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.” inscribed around the lower 180 degrees of the perimeter. The signature presents in some variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the left of center below the cutout for the balance wheel and “SAFETY PINION” is inscribed to the right of center below the cutout in a Serif Caps font. Serial number 783931 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database. Aside from this movement not having a serial number located to the left of center below the cutout for the balance wheel, or anywhere else, the movement markings on this movement are consistent with Model 8 Style 1.

Top Plate Reverse Surface – Observed Engraving Residuals

  • This image documents the reverse surface of the top plate removed from the unidentified early Seth Thomas Model 8 movement. The photograph was taken under raking illumination to reveal subsurface relief features.

  • The most notable anomaly is a faint, reversed impression of text corresponding to the front-side engravings (“Seth Thomas, Thomaston, Conn.” and the floral damaskeening pattern). These reverse impressions are characteristic of deeply cut, die-engraved plates and confirm that the top surface was engraved and damaskeened prior to final finishing.

  • More significantly, below the mainspring recess and slightly to the right of the plate’s center, there is a ghost marking consistent with a partially effaced “JEWELS” inscription. This marking does not appear on the front face of the plate and is not part of any known Model 8 production engraving pattern. According to ChatGPT its presence strongly suggests that the plate was initially machined or engraved using pre-standardized master dies that included jewel-count text, later polished away during rework or prototype refinement.

  • According to ChatGPT this evidence supports the hypothesis that the movement represents a toolroom or first-series prototype, bridging the late Model 6 production and the introduction of the Model 8 series. The combination of (1) missing serial number on the top plate, (2) early-style clamp-type winding bridge, and (3) residual engraving traces together point to an origin near the beginning of the Model 8 production block—possibly serial 700001, or the pre-serial pilot piece used for setup and inspection.

Model 8 Movement Markings

There were three styles of standard movement markings used on Seth Thomas Model 8 pocket watches.

Movement Marking Style 1 - Documented serial number range 701423 - 783931.

Somewhere between movements number 783931 and 796822 the Model 8 serial number marking was moved to a position on the lower left perimeter of the plate below the signature. Serial number 807299 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 2 - Documented serial number range 796822 - 807299

In Lower Serial Number Range

The production run starting with serial number 2500001 saw the Model 8 signature return to its single-line format; but the serial number was still marked on the lower left perimeter of the plate below the signature. Serial number 2516876 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 2 - Documented serial number range 2500169 - 2516876

In Higher Serial Number Range

Somewhere between movements number 807299 and 810984 the Model 8 single-line signature was broken into two lines. Serial number 851852 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 3 - Documented serial number range 810984 - 851852

In Lower Serial Number Range

Somewhere between movements number 2513680 and 2516224 the Model 8 single-line signature was phased out and the two-line style was phased in. Serial number 2592026 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 3 - Documented serial number range 2516224 - 2592026

In Higher Serial Number Range

Open-face Model 6 and hunting Model 7, the Old Eagle Series, are grouped together with Open-face Model 8 and hunting Model 9, the New Eagle Series, because Model 8 and Model 9 were the replacements for and based closely upon the design and configuration of Model 6 and Model 7. Model 8 and Model 9 serial numbers start where Model 6 and Model 7 serial numbers end.  Model 8 and Model 9 New Eagle movements were thinner and had smaller balance bridges than the Model 6 and Model 7 Old Eagle movements [*1.d].

Model 9 movements were manufactured with with a nickel or two-tone finish, and 7 jewels at grade 37; in nickel or two-tone with 11 jewels at grade 107; or 15 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 207; and  17 jewels with a micrometric regulator in nickel or two-tone at grade 211 (including the private label “Edgemere” version) [*1.n].

Model 9 Movement Markings

There were three styles of standard movement markings used on Seth Thomas Model 9 pocket watches.

The standard movement markings on Model 9 movements started out with the signature “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.” inscribed around the lower 180 degrees of the perimeter. The signature presents in some variation of an Old English Text font. The movement serial number is located to the right of center below the cutout for the balance wheel and “SAFETY PINION” is inscribed to the left of center below the cutout in a Serif Caps font. Serial number 801548 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 1 - Documented serial number range 700183 - 804164.

Somewhere between movements number 801548 and 802643 the Model 9 serial number marking was moved to a position on the lower right perimeter of the plate below the signature. Serial number 805407 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 2 - Documented serial number range 802643 - 805407.

Somewhere between movements number 802643 and 804699 the Model 9 single-line signature on some Model 9’s was broken into two lines. Serial number 852665 is the highest serial number utilizing this marking format for which photographic documentation is available on the Pocket Watch Database.

Movement Marking Style 3 - Documented serial number range 804699 - 852665.
