J.M. Smyth and Co.
Information from Wholesale, Retail, and Manufacturer’s Catalogs
John M. Smyth & Company was a very large retail outlet chain, founded in 1867, headquartered in Chicago Illinois, until the last store closed in 2005. Excerpts from their 1909 Catalog No. 62 appear below.
The John M. Smyth Company’s Dictionary of Economy No. 62 contained advertisements for a Lakesite private label pocket watch line that Seth Thomas produced movements for in 18-size Model 8 and Model 9. It also contained advertisements for a Stratford private label pocket watch line that Seth Thomas produced movements for in 18-size Model 12 and Model 13, and in 6-size Model 18. Some of the 6-size Model 18 Stratford movements were set up as 12X6-size watches with a 12-size dial and compact 12-size case that accommodated the 6-size movement. You can see one advertised below as a 12-size; but the movement is clearly an EA 821 Model 18.
