John M. Smyth & Company was a very large retail outlet chain, founded in 1867, headquartered in Chicago Illinois, until the last store closed in 2005. Excerpts from their 1909 Catalog No. 62 appear below.

The John M. Smyth Company’s Dictionary of Economy No. 62 contained advertisements for a Lakesite private label pocket watch line that Seth Thomas produced movements for in 18-size Model 8 and Model 9.  It also  contained advertisements for a Stratford private label pocket watch line that Seth Thomas produced movements for in 18-size Model 12 and Model 13, and in 6-size Model 18. Some of the 6-size Model 18 Stratford movements were set up as 12X6-size watches with a 12-size dial and compact 12-size case that accommodated the 6-size movement.  You can see one advertised below as a 12-size; but the movement is clearly an EA 821 Model 18.

EA 811A – Lakesite – 18-size – Model 8 – Serial Number 2585921 – 15 Jewels

EA 811A – Lakesite – 18-size – Model 8 – Serial Number 2585978 – 15 Jewels

EA 821 – Stratford – 6-size – Model 18 – Serial Number 980589 – 7 Jewels

EA 813C – Stratford – 18-size – Model 12 – Serial Number 1153777 – 7 Jewels

EA 813C – Stratford – 18-size – Model 12 – Serial Number 1205238 – 7 Jewels

The John M. Smyth Company’s Dictionary of Economy No. 62 contained advertisements for the 18-size Century U.S.A. movements that Seth Thomas produced for Sears, Roebuck & Company until 1902.  After that they could also be seen in the catalogs of A.C. Becken, N. Sure Company, Holsman & Alter, and W.H. Lasselle.

The John M. Smyth Company’s Dictionary of Economy No. 62 contained advertisements for a Republic U.S.A. private label pocket watch line that Seth Thomas produced movements for in 18-size Model 12 and Model 13, and 6-size movements in Model 18, Model 19, and Model 24. Republic U.S.A was also sold in the catalogs of N. Shure Company, and Butler Brothers.
