Seth Thomas Grades: Numbered Grades

This section displays specimens from the Seth Thomas Fan Pocket Watch Collection to illustrate the wide range of numbered pocket watch grades manufactured by Seth Thomas despite the jewel count in the vast majority of their watches being only seven.  Specimens of numbered grades appearing in more than one model or jewel count are also included where possible.

Seth Thomas Grade 1

7 Jewel - Model 20

This 1902-1907 Seth Thomas 0-size hunting Model 20 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 2001720, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 1.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement is fitted with a 0-size Seth Thomas Roman dial with ring minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas blued spade hands 0-size.

The movement is cased in a 0-size Illinois Watch Case Co. Adonis 20-years gold filled watch case, serial number 814362. Patented 1905.

Seth Thomas Grade 3

15 Jewel - Model 20

This 1902-1907 Seth Thomas 0-size hunting Model 20 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 15 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 2001213, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 3.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement is fitted with a 0-size Seth Thomas Roman dial with ring minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas blued spade hands 0-size.

The movement is cased in a 0-size Keystone Watch Case Company 25-year 14k gold-filled Boss Scale Crown hunting watch case, serial number 7375323.

Seth Thomas Grade 5

7 Jewel - Model 15

This 1893-1898 Seth Thomas 6-size hunting Model 15 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 138526, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 5.  The  movement is signed “Garden City [BHA]”. 

The movement presents with a 6-size "Garden City" private label Roman dial with Ring Minute Track and Black 5-minute Marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas Open Morning Glory Hands 6-size. Garden City is a Private Label in Seth Thomas Model 15 and Seth Thomas Models 6 and 7.

Seth Thomas produced the Garden City pocket watch for the Chicago based jewelry wholesaler Lapp & Flershem. The engraved initials, BHA, in an oval represents the Lapp & Flershem trademark and logo “Busiest House in America”. Chicago Illinois is the “Garden City”.

7 Jewel - Model 4

This 1887-1888 Seth Thomas convertible 18-size Model 4 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring and micrometric regulator. Its serial number is 35843, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 11. The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”.   

The movement is fitted with an 18-size single-sunk Seth Thomas #1218 Roman dial with a ring minute track and black five-minute marginals. It is fitted with Seth Thomas #1291 blued spade hands for key-wound only, 18-size.

The movement is cased in an open-face 18-size Fahys Watch Case Company, Coin No. 1, watch case, with ornate geometric floral pattern on back cover, serial number J6786.

Seth Thomas Grade 25

7 Jewel - Model 23

This 1913 Seth Thomas 12-size hunting Model 23 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pendant set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 3503163, and its grade is Seth Thomas grade 25.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas Centennial Thomaston, Conn.”.  This is the 7th Seth Thomas Model 23 pocket watch produced. Model 23 serial numbers started at 3500001 and concluded at 3505000.

The movement is fitted with a 12-size Seth Thomas Arabic dial with a hash marks minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1277 blued spade hands 12-size.

The movement is cased in a 12-size American Watch Case Company of Toronto Ltd. 14k 10-Years gold-filled open-face Empress watch case with screw back and bezel, serial number 3731511.

Seth Thomas Grade 26

15 Jewel - Model 23

This 1913 Seth Thomas 12-size hunting Model 23 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 15 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pendant set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 3501673, and its grade is Seth Thomas grade 26.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas Centennial Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement is fitted with a 12-size Seth Thomas Arabic dial with a hash marks minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1277 blued spade hands 12-size.

The movement is cased in a 12-size Illinois Watch Case Company Gold-filled Supreme watch case, serial number 3934224. There is an interesting Illinois Watch Case Company script monogram "IWC" between the model name and serial number.

Seth Thomas Grade 27

17 Jewel - Model 23

This 1913 Seth Thomas 12-size hunting Model 23 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 17 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pendant set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 3500007, and its grade is Seth Thomas grade 27.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas Centennial Thomaston, Conn.”.  This is the 7th Seth Thomas Model 23 pocket watch produced. Model 23 serial numbers started at 3500001 and concluded at 3505000.

The movement is fitted with a 12-size Seth Thomas Arabic dial with a hash marks minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1277 blued spade hands 12-size.

17 Jewel - Model 23 - Adjusted

This 1913 Seth Thomas 12-size hunting Model 23 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 17 jewels, and it is adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pendant set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 3504001, and its grade is Seth Thomas grade 28.  The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas Centennial Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement is fitted with a 12-size Seth Thomas Arabic dial with a hash marks minute track and red five-minute marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1277 blued spade hands 12-size.

The movement is cased in a 12-size Keystone Watch Case Company gold-filled open-face Victory watch case with screw back and bezel, serial number 5318571.

This 1885 Seth Thomas open-face 18-size Model 3 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 41533, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 33.  The  movement is signed Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement presents with an 18-size Seth Thomas Roman dial with a ring minute track and no marginals. It is fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands, 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 1886 18-size Keystone Watch Case Company Silveroid (nickel) open-face watch case with hinged back and bezel, serial number 3324024.

Seth Thomas Grade 34

7 Jewel - Model 2

This 1889-1890 Seth Thomas 18-size hunting Model 2 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished divided 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 543473, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 34. The  movement is signed “Lever Brothers Limited New York”.  

The movement presents with an 18-size private label “Lever Brothers Limited New York” Roman dial with a ring minute track and no marginals. It is fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands, 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 18-size Demi/Half-Hunting stiffened gold watch case with hinged front and back covers, serial number 303692. There are Roman numerals engraved around demi-opening in front cover.

Seth Thomas Grade 35

7 Jewel - Model 16

This 1890-1892 Seth Thomas 6-size hunting Model 16 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 160101, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 35.  The movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”.  This is the 101st Seth Thomas Model 16 pocket watch produced. Model 16 serial numbers started at 160001 and concluded at 200000.

The movement presents with a 6-size Seth Thomas #1203 Roman dial with Ring Minute Track and Black 5-minute Marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1271 Spade Blue Hands - 6-size.

The movement is presently cased in a 6-size Fahys Watch Case Company, 14K gold-filled, 25 Years watch case, serial number 6563478.

Seth Thomas Grade 35

7 Jewel - Model 19

This 1912-1914 Seth Thomas 6-size hunting Model 19 pocket watch was manufactured with a two-tone finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pendant set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 3001903, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 35.  The movement is signed “Seth Thomas Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement presents with a 6-size Seth Thomas #1202 Arabic snug dial with a ring minute track and red five-minute marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas #1271 blued spade hands. The dial has no seconds bit and transforms apparent configuration of the movement from hunting to open-face.

The movement is temporarily cased in a 6-size Illinois Watch Case Company 20-year gold-filled "Winner" hunting watch case, serial number 2792720.

Seth Thomas Grade 36

7 Jewel - Model 8

This 1896-1904 Seth Thomas open-face 18-size Model 8 pocket watch was manufactured with a two-tone finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and pin set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 802346, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 36.  The specially milled “Companion” movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”. The Companion is an early Seth Thomas travel timepiece.

The movement presents with an 18-size single-pressed Seth Thomas #1218 Roman dial with a ring minute track and no marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands 18-size.

Seth Thomas Companion travelers' timepiece. Movement is fitted in a metal block which is leather-covered. First quality leathers are Lizard, Alligator, and Seal, in black, brown and green. Second quality are Morocco in Brown, Black, Green, Blue, Red and English Pig Skin.

Seth Thomas Grade 37

7 Jewel - Model 7

This 1894-1901 Seth Thomas 18-size hunting Model 7 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 518837, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 37.  The  private label movement is unsigned, and marked with the engraving of a medium sized eagle and was probably sold as a private label “Garden City” pocket watch by Lapp & Flershem, a Chicago jewelry wholesaler.  This is the 10,837th Seth Thomas Model 7 pocket watch produced. Model 7 serial numbers started at 508001 and concluded at 647800.

The movement presents with an 18-size private label "Eagle" Blue Fancy Dial with a ring minute track and black five-minute marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands 18-size.

This 1896-1905 Seth Thomas 18-size hunting Model 9 pocket watch was manufactured with a nickel finished 3/4 plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. Its serial number is 759640, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 37. The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”.  

The movement presents with an 18-size double-pressed Seth Thomas #1225 Arabic dial with a hashmarks minute track and red five-minute marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 18-size Illinois Watch Case Company nickel open-face watch case with screw back and bezel, serial number 478996.

Seth Thomas Grade 44

11 Jewel - Model 1

This 1885 Seth Thomas open-face 18-size Model 1 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished 3/4 plate, 11 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring and simple/plain regulator. Its serial number is 6305, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 44.  This is one of the first few private label pocket watches manufactured by Seth Thomas.  The movement is signed “Dan’l Pratt’s Son, Boston”. This is a quick train movement and two patents, Jan. 15, 85 & Sept. 1, 85, are engraved on the movement on one line.

The movement presents with an 18-size unsigned Roman dial with a ring minute track and no marginals. It is fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands, 18-size.

The movement is cased in an open-face 18-size H. Muhr Sons Watch Case Company Silveroid (nickel) pocket watch case with screw back and bezel. The case’s serial number is 943879.

Seth Thomas Grade 46

7 Jewel - Model 14

This 1891-1899 Seth Thomas 6-size hunting Model 14 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished divide plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 111493, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 46.  The  movement was manufactured with a male winding stem instead of a female winding port, and is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”. 

The movement presents with a 6-size Seth Thomas Roman dial with a ring minute track and no marginals; fitted with Seth Thomas Open Morning Glory hands 6-size. 

The movement is presently cased in a 6-size Fahys Watch Case Company watch case with a female Winding Barrel, gold-filled Montauk No 1, serial number 300121.

This 1913 Seth Thomas open-face 18-size Model 5 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished full plate, 7 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a Breguet hair spring, and plain/simple regulator. Its serial number is 302177, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 47. The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”.  

The movement presents with an 18-size Seth Thomas #1240 Roman Canadian dial with red 24-hour numerals and a hash marks minute track with no marginals, fitted with Seth Thomas #1291 blued spade & whip railroad hands 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 18-size Star Watch Case Company open-face nickel watch case with screw back and bezel, serial number, 1231476.

Seth Thomas Grade 52

15 Jewel - Model 2

This 1888-1889 Seth Thomas 18-size hunting Model 2 pocket watch was manufactured with a gilt finished divided 3/4 plate, 15 jewels, and it is non-adjusted. The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring and micrometric regulator. Its serial number is 505814, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 52.  The  movement is signed “EARLE Philadelphia, PA.”.

The movement presents with an 18-size private label EARLE Roman dial signed with the "EWC" monogram for Earle Watch Company; fitted with mixed blued spade and fleur-de-lis hands 18-size.

“Earle Watch Company” is a private label within Seth Thomas Model 2, Model 3, and Model 14. Some of the Earle Watch Company dials are signed with an EWC cluster monogram. Others are signed EARLE in all capital letters. The Earle Watch Company private label pocket watches were manufactured by Seth Thomas for William G. Earle, a Philadelphia jeweler born in 1850, whose store was first located at 13 N. 9th Street and later at 1030 Market Street, from 1881 until his death in 1915. William G. Earle served as a Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1871-1881, prior to becoming a jeweler.

The movement is stem wound and lever set, with a flat hair spring and micrometric regulator. Its serial number is 10396, and its grade is Seth Thomas numbered grade 55.  This is a quick train movement and two patents, Jan. 15, 85 & Sept. 1, 85, are engraved on the movement on one line. The  movement is signed “Seth Thomas  Thomaston, Conn.”.  There were 504 Seth Thomas Model 1 pocket watch produced after this one. Model 1 serial numbers started at 1 and concluded at 10900. 

The movement presents with an 18-size Seth Thomas #1218 Roman dial with a ring minute track and black five-minute marginals. It is fitted with Seth Thomas #1281 blued spade hands, 18-size.

The movement is cased in an 18-size hunting Fahy’s Watch Case Company Oresilver No 1 (nickel) pocket watch case with screw back and bezel. The case’s serial number is 5171622.
